How to partition a hard disk drive containing data

Category: Tools Thomas Frost @ 08:05 AM

I needed to partition my newly bought 1TB WD disk for my HTPC, because i wanted to use some for OS and the rest for data storage, but i had already put 200GB of data onto it. I will explain how I handled this problem, and still kept my data.

First of all i needed a program capable of partitioning a disk that contains data. I was a little careful picking the software, because a software crash right ind the middle of the partitioning, would destroy the data that was already on the disk.

I read a lot of recommendations in different forums and stumbled upon this: http://www.partitionwizard.com/, it did exactly what i needed!

And it was really easy to use, just a few clicks and the disk was partitioned in a few minutes. But remember that it is recommended to backup the data before using the program, even though the program is capable of saving the data.

One thing i struggled with a lot afterwards, was installing the OS and it seemed like i needed to set my newly partitioned part to active(has to be if it should be bootable), stupid mistake but took a lot of time before I realized it was the problem.

SyntaxHighlighter2 extension for Blogengine.net

Category: Programming | Tools Thomas Frost @ 05:31 PM

I wanted to use syntax highlighting on my blog, and I found the well-known SyntaxHighlighter which is started/developed by Alex Gorbatchev.

Now I needed a smart way to implement the files into my blogengine.net application. I found the solution from Chris Blankenship which has made a small extension that implements the scripts and styles you need in the header. The only problem is that it is for the "old" SyntaxHighlighter, so i decided to change the links and update it to SyntaxHighlighter2.0.

How to install:

  1. Download the SyntaxHighlighter2 and place the scripts and styles folders into the SyntaxHighlighter folder that you need to create in the root of your application.
  2. Some tweaks is needed in the css to get the correct path to the images.
  3. Download the new blogengine.net SyntaxHighlighter2.0 extension
  4. Place the file in  ~/App_Code/Extensions/
  5. Now you should be done!

To test it simply build the application and see if the links is in the Page Source.

Or post a quick example like so:

<pre class="brush: js">
    alert("Hello world");
</pre>

This will not work in TinyMCE by default because it makes a lot of changes to the formatted code. Therefore use: FCKeditor. Here is a guide on: How to install FCKeditor on Blogengine.net

Aviary editors is worth trying

Category: Tools Thomas Frost @ 08:32 PM

My friend said I should check this link, and so i did: aviary.com

I looked at it and found a lot of pretty cool "editors" or as they say it: "creation accessible to artists of all genres, from graphic design to audio editing.".

I don't like flash very much, but i must say it is the best browser based photo editor I've ever seen, and properly also the only one ;)

I haven't checked out the others that much, but I'm sure they are just as nice. So if you need a photo editor on the fly i would recommend the one Aviary Phoenix Image Editor.

Mozilla's new OS-music player - Songbird

Category: Tools Thomas Frost @ 04:37 PM

I've missed a proper music player for quite some time now, but I've downloaded the new music player Songbird. I have used it for some hours now and i must say it's awsome!

Like all other Mozilla products it is very costumizeable, which just makes it a joy to find and litsen to the music you want.

Before Songbird I used the Windows Media Player, which is pretty irritating because you have limited options available, and before that Winamp.

Songbird's official site is here, you are able to download the software, and allready many good addons inthere too.

Some of my current addons:

But again the addons is very personal because thats the way i want my music player, but i can recommend them all!

Firefox as mobile browser - Fennec

Category: Tools Thomas Frost @ 10:57 PM

It's just great to see that Mozilla is developing a mobile browser, because i must say that I've missed a proper browser since the Internet Explore(default on windows mobile) is quite bad.

At the moment Fennec is only Alpha 1, but i must say that I'm already amazed! It's simply raising the standard of mobile browsers.

You can read about the browser here: wiki.mozilla.org/Mobile#Fennec, you are able to see screen shots and even download the alpha 1 to your PC, unfortunately the mobile version is only available on Nokia N810(OS2008).

I'm looking forward to see a release to windows mobile so i can get a proper browser to my phone, or mayby even by a touch phone first, because it seems like it's biggest potential is on touch mobiles.

Monitor color test

Category: Tools Thomas Frost @ 11:22 PM

I read this funny blog post on mha today, it's about a color test, which can give you an indication on how good your monitor is.

It's pretty simple, you have to sort the color variations to match each other. I thought this would be a great way to test my new Philips 240BW8EB, and i must say it passed with flying colors:

A screenshot of my color IQ in a monitor color test

It turned out perfectly, but i must say that your eyes has to be a little good to, which mine i'sent, so i relied on my monitor :P

you can try out the test here: Color Test, to see how good your monitor/eyes is.

Windows Live Messenger extensions

Category: Tools Thomas Frost @ 06:16 AM

I'm not a big fan of WLM, but because so many uses it you are kind of forced to use it. So that's why I've found some nice extensions I'd like to share with the readers, you probably already know them or maybe not, but here they come.

The screenshot sender options.I think this is the most popular Plug in to WLM out there, and I am of course talking about Messenger Plus! Live. This extension has a lot of great features, like the option to import scripts into WLM to give it even more features. One of my favorites is the Screenshot Sender, because it makes it very easy to take a screenshot of either the whole screen or just a windows etc. It can be downloaded here: Messenger Plus! Live.

How my stuffplug3 settings look like. One of the problems I encounter in WLM, is that my mail and links all open in Internet Explore, even though I've set Firefox as my default browser. I think that is very irritating, because I want everything to open in Firefox, and the only reason I use IE is to test my projects. But there must  be something out there, that could solve my problem, and there is, it's called StuffPlug 3 and is a plug in which has a lot of little tweaks that help's you customize WLM after your needs. All you need to do is to download the extension from here: StuffPlug 3 and then go to Options and check the Open all URLs in default browser.

This is the two extensions I'm currently using, if you have any other good suggestion about a nice extension feel free to leave a comment.

Firefox must have Addons

Category: Tools Thomas Frost @ 03:52 AM

My firefox addonsAs everyone know, Firefox is the best browser! ..and they have tons of add-ons to customize the browser after your needs.

But the add-ons can easily become a jungle, there is a lot of good add-ons but also a lot of bad once, so I've decided to make a list of my favorite Firefox Add-ons(for 3.0):

Firebug: Just a great extension developer tool which let's you edit and debug things like JavaScript.

Web Developer: Another developer tool where you can do everything from test screen resolution to make div boxes visible, a very good Add-on to research and get experience.

Flagfox: Let's you see where the web server is placed in the world and you can also see the IP.

IE Tab: As every web developer knows, there is a big gab in browser rendering especially in the two most popular browsers, Internet Explore and Firefox. You need to test your sites in both browsers fast and easy, and this Add-on does exactly that. Very nice tool and i use it alot.

YSlow: Is your website slow? test it and see what's wrong with this tool.

All the addons can be found here: addons.mozilla.org just search on the add-on and you will find the newest version.
